So I've been really absent from my local 40k scene recently! One of my usual players moved away, and the other has been so busy with work and other life drama that I haven't played in nearly a year! The only 30k games that I've played are my usual trips to Jacksonville and Adepticon.
But that doesn't mean I haven't been gaming!

The first game that drug me into its clutches was Dust 1947 (http://www.dustgame.com/). Now that much of the drama is over with, and the releases are moving forward (somewhat) regularly, the game's following seems to be growing again. Of course, I just HAD to pick up an army with all of the older plastic kits on clearance. I mean I would be LOSING money if I didn't, right?

Okay, all fiscal stupidity aside, it has been fun to acquire and start to paint - but as of now I haven't found too many local players. (More on that later)

Lots of "primed" miniatures await my paintbrush, but thankfully primed models aren't looked down on (too much) on the gaming tables! (at least they have decals!)

Not to be outdone, Warlord Games decided to roll out a lot of stuff for their WW2 aerial combat game Blood Red Skies at Adepticon. Of course with three of us former military guys standing around a table with the reps saying "Do you want to play a demo game", we couldn't refuse. So, thanks to Jon Russell, we're hooked. Jerk.

Okay, all joking aside, it has been fun to attempt to paint some authentic WW2 aircraft schemes at 1:200 scale. Best of all, it has forced me to pick up my airbrush and get over the intimidation factor of learning a new tool (and failing miserably). Of course, now that I'm having fun with it, I guess I'll have to actually take an airbrush class to get better. Maybe I can also blame that on Jon...

Anyway, so - where to from here. I'm sure I won't be abandoning 40k anytime soon, and certainly not 30k Heresy! But I have opened my aperture to hobby work in some other genres, so don't be surprised if the updates that have been absent for the last year - are not put in place - and they involve games OTHER than GW's 40k/30k line!

More to follow...
Okay, this should be no surprise to you - I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed. My two Space Marine armies are in disarray, my Imperial Knights are only halfway painted, and even some of my Rogue Trader era models still need a lot of work. So why would someone in my position even start a new army?

Base color with Red/Dark washes

Quick rundown of the basic scheme:
Base color - Copper craft paint with Red Tone and Dark Tone washes
Detail colors - AP Greedy Gold and/or AP Gunmetal
Gem Colors - AP Hydra Turquoise
Plume Colors - AP Pure Red with Strong Tone
Gloves/Tabard - AP Leather Brown
Eye Lenses - AP Electric Blue
Power Weapon - mix of Hydra Turquoise, Electric Blue and White

Obviously the first thing I noticed as I was painting the gold and gunmetal details on the model is - "Holy crap that is a lot of detail for a plastic model!" I guess this is a good thing - unless you are in the midst of painting details by hand. What I do enjoy about the high level of detail is that it gives me options for how to draw attention away from the dark red basecoat. Of course the way that details look in the concept art inside the Adeptus Custodes codex are a bit different than how they turn out on the models - requiring a bit of compromise when planning out your paint scheme.
The model's base was another point of frustration for me. The Tectonic Craft Studios base inserts that I picked up were best used as replacement bases - since I couldn't find any of the temple floor base toppers for 40mm in their on-hand stock at Adepticon. I knew what I wanted the base to look like, but finding the right combination of colors and patterns that didn't detract from the Custodes proved to be a bit daunting. I eventually chose to mix AP Pure Red and AP Daemonic Yellow to make a orange border tile color - and then drybrushed over the whole base with Electric Blue followed by AP Soft Tone. In the end, I was happy with the overall product and the amount of time required to get there from unpainted MDF base insert. (we'll see if I change my mind with the Dreadnought base version of this!)

90% completion

At this point I need to color the shoulders with the washes and pick out the detail, along with adding the unit color to the left shoulder. But I'll get to that LATER this week - I'm just happy to have a model that is approaching completion in a scheme that doesn't look TOO amateurish!

Let me know what you think of the custom Adeptus Custodes paint scheme! I'll have to see how it plays out on larger models like the Contemptor and the Jetbike - so there may be tweaks to the design in the future!

One of these years I'll just have to bring an extra suitcase for all of the swag at Adepticon! At least each year I manage to offload a lot of it on my good friend and chauffeur, +Christopher Bergeron .

It has become a bit of a tradition that I had him the "Bergeron Box" at the end of the trip, hopefully giving him some miniatures ripe for conversion, and the odd boxed game or two to play or scavenge minis from. (The Dark Age boxed set looked great to scavenge from!)
We'll have to see what GW brings for an event exclusive miniature next year - and you can bet I'll be signing up quick for the VIG Swag bag again. I was excited to get the Victoria Miniatures Svargan figure as well - even though I don't have an Imperial Guard army to match her. (and no, I'm not starting one!)
I didn't buy a whole lot, as I've never built it myself - and had to rely on Chris' expertise to show me what I didn't know. So, I dabbled a little by picking up some crates from Laser Craft Workshop which I manage to build and paint fairly quickly. Also on the MDF line was a Turn/CP/VP counter from MiniDuels, that will help keep the records straight without our bizarre combo of paper, pencils and dice markers! A quick hit of Rust-Oleum 2X Gray Primer and the turn counter looked good enough for the table. (Simply because I have a lot more miniatures and vehicles that I should be spending my painting time on!)

The crates turned out pretty nice with a basecoat of Rust-Oleum Green Primer, which should set them up for a bit of a detail wash and some chipping marks. I'm not going to spend a great deal of time on these, as they're more of a learning project, so I get my skills in order to not screw up the fancier and more expensive terrain pieces!

This was one of those projects that started on the spur of the moment to JUST LOOK at how a conversion might be done, and ended up taking more time out of my night than I had planned!

The initial plan of the head swap was easy enough - just cut the Space Marine head out of the contemptor and put in the Custodes one, right? Okay, so maybe the easy part was just trimming off the current Contemptor head, which once you slid a hobby knife under the helmet lip and cut the back panel, was pretty smooth sailing. Once the
helmet and backplane assembly popped free, it was just a matter of trimming the neck stub off of the Allarus Custodian head - but a word of caution here - I chose to leave just a little of the neck on there so that the head would sit level. Otherwise you will find yourself needing to trim the chin cabling from the helmet. I though that might not give the look I wanted, and I'm glad I left it on. (even if it made the head sit a bit higher in the canopy.)

Once the head was blue-tacked in to check the fit, I knew I wanted to "Custodes-up" the body of the Contemptor, but I also knew that I didn't like the "shoulder wings" look of the customization in the new 40k Custodes codex.

So, I set to cutting up the Vexillas in both the original Custodes set and the Allarus Custodes kit. The good news is that you get a Vexilla in each kit, even though you won't use more than one or two in your whole army - so Imperial Wings for ALL MY FRIENDS!

Okay all humor aside. The real question became where to attach them. I tried the shoulders and didn't like the look. I also didn't like how the streamers in the GW conversion looked stuck on - so I opted to cut them from the wings and use them elsewhere. I tried various ways to affix the wings to the torso of the Contemptor and they all just did not look good. What I settled on was adding the wings from the Custodian Guard Vexilla to the hip joints of the dreadnaught, and then cut the upper half of the Allarus Vexilla to add it to the top of the dreadnaught's hull. The streamers and the lower half of the Allarus Vexilla were added to the weapon arms in an attempt to give some additional "jewelry" to the Ancient Custodian's dreadnaught suit.
Overall I'm happy how it turned out. Just need to drill out some gun barrels, install the pins and magnets for the two weapons arms and put the basing material down. (now which chapter of heretics will get featured on this Contemptor's base?? And then it is off to painting! Let me know what you think of this conversion in the comments below! Too much dangly bits? Not enough wings? Should have made the Vexilla into a codpiece for the dreadnaught? Now it comes down to a moment of decision.
Which of the schemes do I commit to, and more importantly, which will look good on each style of Custodes figure?

For those who care, here are the paint combos for the schemes.

Note - none of the gold (or white for that matter) has had a wash put over it as it will in the final version.
The white is just the base Armory white primer
The gold is Army Painter Greedy Gold (2-3 coats as mine goes on fairly thin)

Now I'm not saying they should look like the "Bag of Skittles" that is the usual Multi-Chapter Space Marine battlefield...
So let's talk about a few concepts ideas I've seen between Adepticon and a Google image search!

There are those that keep the gold armor and just change the inner pauldron color and inner helmet details. Here is one of those from Adepticon 2017 that I really liked:

Custodes Tanks... YES, PLEASE!

I really thought the lighter gold and the black accents made for a unique look without turning them into just another multi-color army. And on a side note, I hope that Forge World will release the rules for Relic Custodes tanks in 40k. I know - make us take lots of the crappy Venerable Land Raiders first... but I want my hover tanks!

Now, not all of them use a base gold layer. A quick Google search for "40k custodes colors" leads to a few albums of images where white is the base color and gold is just the highlight. That coupled with the blue plumes make for a wonderfully distinctive army. Album at can be found HERE .

Certainly doesn't look like the GW army!

There are plenty of other examples out there, and of course the Adeptus Custodes Codex has some diverse ones - Base armor color in Black, or Purple robes / details, etc.. Personally I tend to favor the Black armor, gold highlights and custom sash/plume colors... But I'll admit the white armor is growing on me!
Next step for me - cutting the 5 storm shields off of the BoP sprue and figuring out the base armor colors that I want before I even consider robes, pauldrons, etc.

Okay, so in defense of the game designers who wrote the Adeptus Custodes rules, I WAS winning until turn 6 - when my opponent ran away with the Victory Points!

Those of you who looked at the image of the battle above may ask - "Where are the Adeptus Custodes minis?" They're still in a box... not even clipped from the sprue! Yes, I am the WORST 40k hobbyist ever! (remember that last blog post about all the crap that has taken me away from wargaming?) I proxied the Custodes with Space Marine models - including two old 2nd Edition Land Speeders as the Shield Captains on jetbikes.

Okay, on to the description of the battle - and this is by no means a battle report - just a quick summary with a few observations.

---------------------
Points: 2000
Mission: Race to Victory (Chapter Approved 2017)
Deployment: Front-line Assault
Forces: Adeptus Custodes vs Astra Militarum
--------------------
So here is what I fielded for my 2000 points:
Warlord
Shield Captain on Dawneagle bike - Salvo launcher + Misericordia
Relic - Raiment of Sorrows
Trait - Radiant Mantle

Shield Captain on Dawneagle bike - Salvo launcher + Misericordia
Relic - Castellan's Mark (via Open The Vaults for 1CP)

Two squads of 4 Vertus Praetors
3 Salvo launchers and 1 Hurricane bolter equipped bike per squad

Three squads of Custodian Guard (3, 3, 4 per)
Guardian Spear + Misericordia for all

Two Vexilus Praetors
Guardian Spear + Misericordia + Vexilla Magnifica
-------------------
Opponents forces: (roughly)
Cadian Astra Militarum
4 Leman Russ Tanks - Pask - 2 Vanquishers, 1 Punisher and 1 Demolisher
1 Hellhound
1 DeathStrike Launcher
3 Squads Scions
3 Infantry Squads
Various Company Commanders, and other HQs
(and I'm sure I'm forgetting something there...)
------------------

The game was close in Victory Points, with the end of Turn 5 having my Custodes ahead by 2 points and having achieved 8 of 10 Tactical Objective cards to complete the mission. Of course the game went another turn where my opponent racked up 5 VPs to my zero and completed all 3 of his Tactical Objective cards, bringing him to 10 and ending the mission.

Don't mind us bikers over here, minding our own business behind these bunkers!

Here are my observations - none of them earth shattering:

Custodes are very resilient, especially when in cover against low AP-mod weapons (when you don't need to use the 4+ invul of a Battle-forged Custodes Army)

Custodes have a moderate range (24") to reach out and touch opponents, but small squads have neither the rate of fire nor damage output in their troop squads to significantly influence waves of enemies as they advance. (even my 4 man team only put out 8 shots in overwatch - which isn't bad with the AP -1, but just not great for the points.

Custodes custom wargear for the jetbikes is great, and a mix of hurricane bolters and salvo launchers worked well to hurt heavier targets and infantry masses - but unless you plan on charging a large armored target, you will need a lot more bikes to plink tanks from your enemy. (and then the downside of either an exploding tank you charged, or killing it and being in the middle of the enemy's tank line - and getting pulverized)

Vexillas do help, especially since I took the one that gives your opponent -1 to hit - especially when facing Scions with BS 3+. But I'm not sure it was worth the points...

Land Raider - didn't take one in the first game and HATED not having the 48" inch reach of the lascannons. Took one in my second game - and had to replace and entire Bike squad to field it. While it was able to reach out and "influence" the Cadian Leman Russ tanks, even with two twin lascannon batteries it isn't going to pop a tank every turn - unless you roll very well

And as expected - the Relics and Stratagems really make the Custodes army feel fluffy! I used the Castellan's Mark to reposition a Shield Captain and 4 bikes from one side of the board to the other right before the start of the game. (just remember they have to stay IN your deployment zone - they aren't infiltrators) This worked great, and the outflanking maneuver led to a dead Hellhound which consumed quite a few shocked guardsmen - right until the DeathStrike actually made it to launch on turn two - and obliterated the bike squad - and put a few wounds on the Shield Captain with them.

Raiment of Sorrows - This relic was a lot of fun - as the bikers with my Warlord kept getting picked off slowly, having one more shot with the salvo launchers or hurricane bolters just added insult to injury for my opponent. Nothing like losing half a squad of Scions when a random lascannon shot from across the board took a Custodes last wound...

So as I said - not earth shattering revelations - but certainly has guided how I will employ Adeptus Custodes next weekend against my Eldar opponent.

I would love to hear about other Adeptus Custodes players experiences with the new codex in the comments below!

Over the last 7 months my hobby time has been crushed by work travel, photography workshops, and renovating a 1950's house for family. The sad part is I have even packed up miniatures and paints on several of these trips - but to no avail!

Anyway, enough complaining about me, have you guys seen the preview of the new Knights over at Warhammer Community?

I'm glad they're introducing some Knights that are smaller than the current ones - more akin to the secondary scout Knights that were in Epic scale, but I guess it means I may stop working on my "modified" scouts that are based on the AdMech walkers - example below:

Oh well, I'll still field a few modified walkers in my AdMech army - I just have to get to assembling the last two or three!

(But there is a box of Primaris Marines and a LOT of 30K Imperial Fists between me and anything AdMech!)

Well, there goes the weekend...
Here are my thoughts after unboxing and assembling the first of what will undoubtedly be a LOT of Primaris Marines.

First off, I love the amount of detail in the miniatures. This is certainly light-years ahead of where we were with out previous plastic "easy to assemble" kits.
Second, I'm already in love with the size of the miniature - it really makes the Marines seem trans-human as they are so much larger than a Guardsman.

But here are a few funny observations:
Haven't we found a better sprue attachment point than the spherical vents on the Space Marine backpack? After 10,000 years??
(minor gripe I know..)

Mold lines in the MIDDLE of the shoulder pads?? HERESY!!
(okay, another minor grip - it is an "easy to assemble" mini!)

Overall, I'm really happy so far with a whopping one and a half miniatures assembled - more to follow later in the week!
Okay - I'll admit I'm getting all "conspiracy theory" here in this post, but when I saw the new Primaris Reivers this weekend, it all started to fall into place for me regarding the Primaris Marines eventually supplanting the current Space Marines in the GW fluff / IP.

I get it - the fluff has entire chapters of Primaris Marines going into combat. But what if they aren't fighting side by side with regular Marine Chapters and the Astra Militarum? So they'll need infiltration units, right? They'll need Librarians, right? They'll need flyers, right? So where will this stop? Will Primaris Marines become as diverse an army as Space Marines are currently? Will they have their own Artillery, Anti-air and heavy Tanks?

Now I'm not saying that GW is going to replace the Space Marines overnight - but if you look at it conspiratorially - it is a great way to protect their IP. Lots of people have written about "Space Marines" and lots of sci-fi armies have "scouts" - but does anyone besides GW have "Primaris Marine Reivers" - no they don't.

So when will we know that GW intends to replace Space Marines?

Primaris Bikes.

Or maybe GW will let the Power Armored Bike Gang image die... (although grav-bike Primaris Marines would be cool!)

Primaris Flyer

Oh wait - that is already in the fluff - instead of a plastic Thunderhawk could we see a plastic Primaris Overlord. (5 engines, really?? Did we have to turn it up to ELEVEN??)

Primaris Chaplain

I'm betting he's the next character out there - but with the Reivers wearing the cheesy-skull-face-masks, he had better have a cool helmet that isn't just a death's-head.

Primaris Tech-Marine

They better have one of these too - If Mr. Big and Tall is expecting a bunch of robe-wearing-techno-fish-heads to keep up - well, the fluff just took an interesting turn - by removing the independence of the Marine Chapters.

Primaris Artillery

Templates are dead - who needs indirect fire when you can buy troops that enter the game AND charge in the same turn. Or maybe it will force Imperial players to bring along an Astra Militarum Spearhead detachment to bring in the big guns... pretty fluffy if I say so myself!

Primaris Anti-air

Okay, so we haven't seen a Devastator equivalent to the Primaris Marine, so they COULD expect Primaris Marines to defend themselves with Flakk missiles - but if a dedicated AA vehicle hits the streets, I'll put my money on it being the near the end of the regular Space Marines. (or see artillery comments above for why to make Marine players buy AM models as well!)

Thoughts, comments, snide remarks? What will be the tipping point for GW to not need to produce the regular Space Marine chapters as miniatures anymore?

And how soon could that be...

I gave in - I tried to not order the boxed set, but I did - and now I have a bunch more models inbound. Now the tough part becomes assembling the paints I need and developing a paint scheme that I'll enjoy painting a whole new army in!

With the number of Primaris Marines that are in the Dark Imperium boxed set, I am going to "hedge my bets" a bit and paint at least one of the squads as Imperial Fists - but with the yellow scheme I've used previously on my 40k models, not the newer Orange-ish yellow that has been the Imperial Fists standard in editions 7 and 8.

Inquisitor for reference

As for developing my custom paint scheme for a Primaris Founding chapter - well, I tried to use the GW provided template, but the gaps in the image didn't work so well with the Adobe Photoshop Fill Bucket tool! So I was relegated to using the (now outdated) Bolter and Chainsword Space Marine Painter tool. Unfortunately, the tool really can't simulate metallics, or painting effects very well, so results may vary. Realizing that the body of my Primaris Marines would be in the same dark metallic blue as my Ordo Machinum Inquisitor, I built the following color mock-up on a Mk7 model at Bolter and Chainsword.

I wanted the dark Turquoise in there as a nod to my current chapter - Green Templars, but too many colors in common with the Alpha Legion as a whole Still not totally what I wanted - but a start.

So I made the shoulder pads white, and left the Turquoise to the Aquilla and and stripe on the helmet. What looks like a brown trim is actually intended to be a dark bronze color. I thought of carrying over the red copper accents from the shoulder pads on the Inquisitor, but the process of washes might get a bit sloppy on trim.

This is all still a work in progress - which at least gives me something to do while I wait for the Dark Imperium box to arrive! I've seen some other "New" chapter paint schemes, and the one over at 30Kplus40K looks pretty good. Feedback is always appreciated, even if I don't immediately apply it to my painting!

Yes, that is a scale model of a frame for my gaming table... why do you ask?
After the frustration of the arrival of summer in South Carolina and the increasing misery factor for playing in our usual locations (a friend's garage or screened-in porch), I decided to take matters into my own hands.

The goal was to have a frame that could fit over my dining room table, as that rarely sees use, except as a buffet holder when friends come over for parties! With the wife's blessing, and a promise to not mar the finish, I set about to turn a 55" square surface into a 4'x6' table for 40k. I had the following requirements

One person can assemble or disassemble

Balanced and secured so that a rogue feline or opponent won't up-end it

Able to use a variety of terrain boards

Not look like it was made by a renegade servitor with two left thumbs

So what does a modeler do when they need to estimate materials and ensure compliance with the requirements? Build a scale model of course!! Thankfully I only needed to build half of the frame, as it was easy to extrapolate materials from that one. Thus with a few balsa craft "Skinny Sticks" I was able to assemble a rough prototype for one-half of the table.

The design is for 24"x24" drop in tiles (more on those later) to fit inside the frame with a minimum of underside support framing. I might consider adding another longitudinal support to allow the use of 12"x12" tiles - but that isn't in the basic plan, at least for now.

Now off to Lowes to pick up the lumber to build the first half! (if it ever stops raining here in SC!!)

I'll show how I plan to protect the table's finish and attach the two halves in the follow-on posts.

Closer to True-scale?? Yes, please!

Primaris Smurfs, FTW!

The real problem for me is that I am stuck in the Rogue Trader Mk 6 era.

I have built my custom chapter's fluff and story around the Mk 6 armor that first brought me into Warhammer 40k, during the Rogue Trader era. I had kept with that look, even when the crouched Space Marines became the "not-really-transhuman-sized" Marines and I totally avoided Mk 7 armor for my army.

Well, now that is all going out the window with the Primaris Marines. You see, I've taken the snide remarks from younger players (i.e. 3rd edition and later), who look at my Rogue Trader Land Raider and say "wow, so small - isn't it just cute?" And let's not even get to the comments about the Rogue Trader Mk 6 armored Marines who are shorter than current Imperial Guardsmen. (Yes, my Space Marines must have a Napoleon complex these days.)

My point is, that I think the size of the Primaris Marines will become the de-facto standard eventually. In an effort to "future-proof" whatever I do, I'm left with two choices:

Build my Primaris Marines as Imperial Fists so that when the shift to "Primaris Scale" happens, I don't have to put my whole army on the shelf

Build a new chapter with custom fluff using Primaris Marines - so I at least get to paint something unique from every OTHER Space Marine player - and future-proof my army for the shift to "Primaris Scale"

What do the rest of you think? First Founding chapter, or something new?? (or do I just make the Primaris Marines a part of my current Green Templar's chapter - even though they are Mk 6-based Space Marines?)

Yes, yes I have...
So with that it is time to get back to this Blog and update everyone on what has gone on!

Adepticon 2017 forced me to get 31 Heresy-era Imperial Fists painted up (somewhat), and I'm indebted to my friend +Christopher Bergeron for helping me with detail work on the day I had to actually field the army. They played well, and I was happy with winning the first of three games, only to lose the next two - but having a blast as it was all Zone Mortalis play.

(and then everything came to a screeching halt!)

So now that I'm past the series of aviation photography workshops that I teach every spring and fall, I can now concentrate on working on my armies - and then enter a new edition of Warhammer 40k. It isn't bad enough that there are new rules, but there are new, beautiful Space Marine models. (I can hear my wallet screaming from here...)

More to come in the next few weeks as we transition to 8th Edition and all of the fun (and craziness) that will entail.
Rest of Model:

AP Daemonic Yellow Spray Primer / Basecoat

AP Gunmetal - Bolter

Custom wash - 3 parts AP Soft Tone & 2 parts AP Red Tone

Copper edging - Craft Copper paint (still the best, smoothest 2-coat copper I have)

AP Pure Red - Lenses

There is still a lot of work to do on each of them, but this at least gets the breacher unit to a table ready status with a paint job that I won't be ashamed to field at Adepticon later this year!

I've made a little progress with my display case over the past few months. Cork walls with wood dowel reinforcements have been assembled as the fortification curtain walls. They are modular allowing me to remove them in sections, and to access the cable pass-through that is hidden behind the central platform.

When I was looking for a good way to create some gothic-looking balconies to display figures on, I remembered that I had some of the Syberclicks terrain set that fit the bill perfectly.

I still haven't decided about the upper balconies - whether to put the miniatures behind the windows, or to simply place the windows flat against the outer wall with "stained glass" behind them. I guess a little experimentation will be in order once I paint the wall itself!

That's right 40k fans - I used an AoS Stormcast Eternal as the base model for my "Alternatively Styled" Tech Priest Dominus!

<insert cries of "Heresy" here>

Well now that we got that out of our system, let's see what I did to build this guy...

The base model was a Stormcast Eternal Liberator with only minor modifications:

Removed axe and shield

Threw away those God-awful shoulder pads

Removed lower part (scales) on tabard

At this point it was ready for the build-up.

Added Ad Mech cog bit (from an Imperial Knight) to the belt

Covered over standard Ad Mech center of insignia (I mean this guy ain't from Mars!)

Green-stuffed new blocky feet (no pointy-toed Tech Priest here!)

Added Anvil Industries bits:

Mechanical Arm backpack, arms and axe-head

Shoulder pads from Puppetswar - Praetorian Type I for "Termos"

Repositioning of various bits from Anvil Industries such as scopes, plasma cutters, etc onto the end of the mechanical arms.

I purposely chose a Stormcast Eternal head with big lightning bolts on it to go with some of my other Ad Mech "lightning" insignia. (a decal of which will eventually make it onto the belt cog!)

Paint scheme was the same techniques from my Inquisitors to produce the blue-tinted metal, with gold detail added to the arms and weapons. The only difference was the use of a darkened AP Pure Red on his volkite blaster. (something HAD to have a martian red color to it!) Weapon glow was a mixture of paints built up that I don't really remember right now - it was an experiment at the time with AP reds, yellows and a bit of white.

So there he is, minus some more basing work. If you are still wondering why I used a humanoid model for a Tech Priest Dominus, let's just leave it at this - I don't find spidery Tech Priests wearing a sock on their head to be awe-inspiring!
Since I've made a bit of progress since I last posted it, here are some more WIP update photos on the Aquila Gate.

The basecoat was the same Blue spray-paint-can color that my previous fortifications were colored with. I chose to do the whole structure, inside and out so that I could achieve the blue-drybrushed-with-Grey effect wherever I needed to in the structure. Obviously a lot of the interior details will be painted in something different than the "custom ferro-crete color" I'm using.

After that I applied a craft paint Copper to the Aquila and important building details.

I painted a wash of AP Red Tone over the top of the bright copper craft paint to give it a deeper tone, did a bit of copper drybrush on the central door details and then called it quits to move on to more important projects!

Sadly, I've had these Mk III armors for over a year, sitting in a container in the hobby closet, just waiting the right time to get the Imperial Fist paint scheme.

Am I going to paint them up in the same scheme as my 30k Imperial Fist Mk IV squad?

NOPE!

I'm not one who needs a unified scheme for an army. In fact, by using different patterns of power armor, I kind of feel obligated to paint them at least slightly differently. But in my case, I know that I am not looking to place these guys on a display board and win any awards with them - so instead I want to paint a wide breadth of Heresy-era Imperial Fists schemes. (At least with the models that I have on hand, now!)

Planned Scheme:
Primer / Basecoat - Army Painter Flat Black
Drybrush - AP Gunmetal
Wash - AP Dark Tone
Shoulders and forearms - AP Daemonic Yellow
Wash - AP Soft tone + Red Tone mix

On the modeling side, I had a few extra torsos and heads, so I've picked up some plastic arms and legs from the Prospero set - and I'm already a bit frustrated with how the legs go together! I guess I should have glued them in pairs when I received them from my bits re-seller instead of just dumping them into the assembly tray. OOPS!

Anyhow, more to come this week on these guys as I work to get 10 of them at least built with their Sergeant.D.Gloverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06541191035366236413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4305463577635775562.post-77827349789710076882017-01-23T21:00:00.000-05:002017-01-23T21:00:16.566-05:00Back from a few month break(or Once again the rumors of my demise are over stated!)
So there has been a lot of non-hobby work (and play) going on in the past few months since my last 40k blog post. Photography workshops, work travel and a few vacations to make up for all the work travel to my wife! Sadly my miniatures have only made it out of the display case a few times, but at least I have managed to get in a game or two along with some modelling in the intervening months.

One of the more fun events was a 14-hour slugfest using modified 40k:Carnage rules for a 4-way fight between Space Marines, Dark Eldar, Tau and the Deathwatch. I may post more details of the forces involved later, but suffice it to say at one point there were 11 flyers in the game at once!

Prep is ongoing for Adepticon in March (assuming my work travel doesn't create a conflict) and thankfully I'm only participating in small 500-point events, so I don't have too large of an army to bring. More to come on that army build later this month.

I hope the holidays were enjoyable for everyone and I'm happy to finally have enough breathing room to update you all on my hobby progress!D.Gloverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06541191035366236413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4305463577635775562.post-68154123651959951722016-08-11T09:30:00.000-04:002016-08-11T09:30:04.970-04:00The Grand Army of Shame(Hey, they're not cardboard proxies!
A few weeks ago I drove down to Jacksonville, Florida, to participate in a day of gaming and 40k nerdery (that is a word!). The week that proceeded it was a flurry of model building, basing and priming. I didn't actually get any more models to a finished state, but at least it wasn't a Grey Tide swamping the enemy there!

While I didn't get to face off against +Christopher Bergeron and his heretical followers of Horus, it was fun to watch one mixed 30k/40k game and participate in a 40k team game. Any chance to move models, drink beer and eat good food can't be passed up! Even though it was 6 hours of driving for 8 hours of 40k, it was worth it in the end to force me to build a lot of the units I had been amassing bits for.

Must....Build...More....Marines!!

You see, that is the biggest lesson I learned from this -

You can't be afraid to build your army while waiting to perfect a paint scheme, or to design the perfect magnetized/pinned weapon plan. Just jump in an build what you want (or need) right now, and worry about finding parts for your next seven projects LATER!

(Yes, I was hoarding an incredible amount of Mk6 parts for when I would decide what to build... fool!)

Anyway, are you wondering why I call it the Grand Army of Shame? Well, once I saw the beautifully painted armies of my opponents paired off against my primed horde, it was nothing short of SHAMEFUL! Needless to say I have my priorities straight for the next month.... PAINT!

Currently my armies reside in a two-part display case that also serves to support a printer, scanner and Network Storage. I really don't have room in my current space for a large mutli-tier transparent case, and to be honest, I don't think I'd fill one, anyway!

But what does bother me is seeing my armies on the wood shelves, sitting there like a collection of miniatures, not an army on display! So to remedy this, I decided to build a "sound-stage" of terrain that wouldn't reduce the display area significantly, while giving a bit of background to the display area. (and hiding some wires, cable pass throughs, etc...)

The first part of the build is to give some flooring to the case that reinforces the 40k theme. Unfortunately I have a few different base styles between my armies, so I probably won't be able to make one coherent display area that matches the armies bases... but who knows. So to cover the most amount of area, I opted for 12x12 cork tiles with an inset of diamond-pattern non-skid.

I first made the cutouts in an upper tile to inset the plates in. There is always a bit of cutting and fitting each on in perfectly, so I numbered each plate to match each inset, preventing frustration later on!

After gluing each of the upper tiles to a lower tile, they were ready for painting, so I turned to the inset plates.
The plates were spray painted a basic silver, as I hit them afterwards with a good amount of the Dark Tone wash from Army Painter.

The tiles were sprayed with a black basecoat, ensuring that the numbers were still visible, and the edges of the tile given an even coat.

That was then followed by the 3-color scheme that I used for my Imperial Fist bases and Gothic terrain.

Now the numbering scheme becomes apparent!! This way I wouldn't lose my mind trying to get the plates in the correct tile!

In preparation for a day of gaming this past month, I decided to build some larger terrain pieces that weren’t just ruins. Several different 40k terrain pieces inspired me to do a larger piece that could be used as a whole or in pieces. I wanted to build a gate that would allow Land-Raider sized vehicles to pass, while still providing the feel of a walled citadel.

I’ve seen a lot of similar builds that use the giant Aquila from the Shrine of the Aquila kit, most if which were amazing builds. As expected, I "borrowed" ideas from several ones while trying to keep the build on a reasonable scale. I knew it would be big based on the size of the front Aquilas, but I had no idea until I actually built the two gatehouse towers and placed the walkway between them! Parts were also taken from the Sanctum Imperialis kit, which fit pretty well with a few minor cuts and sanding.

My toughest design decision came on whether or not to build the towers in a ruined or intact form. What I settled on was to build it in a semi-ruined fashion that allowed it to play as an indestructible ruin, or as a dilapidated fortification, with all of the building add-ons. I used the flooring supplied with the two kits to build in a partial rooftop battlement, and a few secondary floors. The base of the towers was built on 6 inch square cork tiles, so that I'd have some flexibility with gluing rubble, tiles or dead heretics to the surrounding area.

For play as a dilapidated structure I opted to build a removable back wall. A simple cork structure that was reinforced with wood dowels and plastic girders and piping gave it some visual interest and enough rigidity to hopefully survive tabletop handling.

I originally wanted the rear wall to hinge away from the structure, but a few glitches in my design put that beyond reach. I settled for installing pins in several locations that would hold the wall in place, but allow it to be removed for use as a ruin.

What worked very well (to my surprise) was the plastic I-beams as both structural members and for matching up the juncture between plastic walls and cork walls. In the image to the left you can see where I added it to the inner junction of the two wall types, and it provided enough structure to keep the cork in place, along with the secondary girders and wood pilings.
I will post more of what the two look like with their floors installed, and some table-ready painting done to them. I really enjoy how they look, even at this stage, and can't wait to get some more time to devote to finishing them up.D.Gloverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06541191035366236413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4305463577635775562.post-4573831863449420382016-08-06T21:30:00.000-04:002016-08-06T21:30:04.573-04:00Desert Fortifications - Firestorm Redoubt(or Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... right?)

So yes, I have managed to make some fortifications OTHER than the Desert Towers in my previous posts. In this case, I wanted to scratchbuild a fortification CHEAPLY, yet still make it visually appealing and roughly match the dimensions of the GW kit.

Rough structural form

The entire structure is made out of the same plastic cat treat containers as the Desert Towers, just cut down to be approximately the height of the Firestorm Redoubt. Since I was going to place weapons on the top of each tower, I built them to the height of the battlements on the GW model. The turrets are Liberator Sponsons from Blood and Skulls Industry, and the quad-laser is from them as well. The Punisher Gatling cannon is the Gatling Gun from Puppetswar. I chose to make one of each mount simply because I wanted to try them on my current Force Org listing with my Imperial Armies.

Marine added for scale

A little bit of cork to provide a floor and battlements to the center section completed the basic building structure. A Cork base was added to give some ground to texture in front of the Redoubt's walls. The entire structure was glued to the cork using a hot glue gun for both a good seal and to break up the linear edges of the building before basing sand was added. Getting the center roof of the building in place and supported with wood slats was a bit of an adventure. We'll have to see how it holds up to gaming use, as it is also held in place with hot glue.

texture spray coating added

A quick spray coat of textured paint and the building was ready for the same 3-color treatment as the Desert Towers. A quick reminder - you don't need to cover the color of your building materials, and several light coats work better than one heavy texture coat. You can still see the printing on the plastic in the image to the left, and this was in between coats one and two of the textured paint. After it dries for about 24 hours, go ahead and hit it with your primary base color. (otherwise you'll be moving the texture with your brush! The same thing happens if you spray too heavy of a coat or don't let the previous texture coat dry.)

Anyone seen some Heretics around here?

The 3-color desert scheme took well to the textured paint, but the drybrushing highlighted some of the bad glue joints on the building panels. For the cost of materials versus a GW Firestorm Redoubt, I am fine with the glaring joint issues. The last bits to be added were the turrets and their mounts. Drinkers of craft beer may recognize the base of the turret mounts as the plastic tops that hold the 6-pack of cans together. A bit of sanding to remove any raised lettering, and the mounting plate from the Liberator (with magnets installed) was superglued to the plastic top, which in turn was superglued to the building roof. I chose to not use hot glue as I wanted a smooth seam between turret and roofline.

Overall, I am happy with how the Redoubt turned out. For about $21 in resin parts I've got a fortification to use and experiment with in my armies. Because the turrets are magnetized to their mounts, it allows me to move them between the towers and the redoubt depending on where I spend the points. Plus, the lack of blatant gothic Imperial styling, almost any army in our local group can use it with their forces! Mission success in my book!
